Former Deputy Chairman House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Ayo Omidiran believes women football will need some assistance from the Nigeria Football Federation to improve the fortunes of the country’s women’s national team.
Within the space of three months, the Super Falcons failed to qualify for the 2016 Olympics football event, failed to grab a medal at the All African Games and dropped nine places to 38th position in the Fifa rankings for the third quarter of 2015.
According to Omidiran, the game is not growing in the country as evident in the performance of the Falcons in recent outings and blames its slow and painful death to the existence of a weak female league plus lethargy on the part of coaches.
“Since the national is the major yardstick by which we measure the development of women football in the country, the obvious fact is that the game is not growing. Now that everyone is beating us front, left and centre, it leaves much to be desired,” Omidan told Goal.
“The league is in tatters with many teams missing away matches, besides the coaches are not helping matters owing to their overreliance on some set of players without efforts to try out new players.
“As long as these continue to happen, we will keep getting this kind of results, but if we change the way we are doing things now, we are bound to get better.”
The former proprietress of Omidiran Babes admonishes the country’s football ruling body plus coached to play their roles very well to help the fortunes of the game in the country.
“I have no doubts that we have players that are good for the national team, they just have to be discovered. And going by this, the coaches need to work very harder.
“The Nigeria Football Federation on their own part must pay massive attention to women’s football and try as much as possible to get sponsors for them,” she concluded.
