Army shocked as captured Boko Haram suspects can’t recite Quran

Military interrogators grilling a set of Boko Haram fighters captured in one of the numerous operational areas in the north east were shocked that many of the terrorists, including their Amir, or leader, could not read any portion of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, when they were asked to do so.
A video of the interrogation, released by the military, shows a group of terrorists, including their unit leader, captured by Nigerian troops battling to pronounce words when directed to recite or read from the holy book.
Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman disclosed that the Boko Haram unit leader, named Yusuf, was captured recently and the suspect confirmed that he has been the Amir of the sect for two months.
The captured group was part of a unit of terrorist fighters operating with five Rocket-Propelled Grenades [RPGs], ten guns and large quantities of ammunition who were ambushed by soldiers in the frontlines of Borno State.
Usman said that two days ago, 43 other suspects, including another key figure, identified as Modu, who is also an Amir, or leader of the Bulakuri unit, were arrested in a raid, stressing that during the operation, the rest of the insurgents sneaked into the surrounding bush and headed towards the mountains.
In the video clip, a military officer can be seen interrogating the suspects in Hausa language. Part of the interrogation session was shown to have progressed with the interrogator asking the Amir: “Do you pray? Can you read Quran? Please read out or recite some portions that you know to us,” without receiving any positive response.
When the terrorist leader could not answer, the officer asked mockingly, “How can you be an Amir without being able to read the Quran? How can you pray? What do you read to people? You are the Amir and you are in-charge of RPGs [Rocket-Propelled Grenade] used by your group. Where are the RPGs you shot us with? Where are the rest of your members?”
The suspect looked very confused and kept murmuring one-word answers to most of the questions thrown at him. When the interrogators could not obtain satisfactory answers to several questions put to the suspects, one of the officers who was not identified said: “Can you see that Allah has caught you? Do you now believe that your god has deserted you and is not working for you again? You cannot even read the Quran. What kind of Amir are you?”
