The policy thrust of the Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal
administration is centred on education, agriculture, health and youth
empowerment. Since his inauguration three months ago, Tambuwal had given
priority to education with the belief that attaining tremendous
progress in such sector would transform the state. Determined to reverse
the poor educational status of the state, he had on assumption of
office, perfected arrangements to criminalise parents’ refusal to send
their children to school. Thus, if a bill presented by the governor
before the state House of Assembly is eventually passed into law,
parents who refuse to send their children to school to acquire education
will be committing a criminal offence.
With the belief that when the state gets its education priorities
right, many ills of the society will be taken care of, the governor
directed the immediate employment of 500 teachers to address the
shortfall in teaching personnel in the public schools. Similarly, the
present administration has commenced moves to equip 240 primary
healthcare centres in the three senatorial zones of the state. It was in
view of the need to protect the health of the citizenry, that the
governor re-introduced the special sanitation exercise to rid the state
of the menace of refuse dump sites.
